It is written for adults and families. The prose reads at roughly a seventh-grade level, so most teens from about 13 can read it on their own, and children from about 8 to 10 can follow along when a parent reads it aloud as a family devotional. The chapters on Christ’s arrest and crucifixion describe His scourging in some detail, so parents of younger children may want to read those first. The Reading Guide is written for ages 12 to 16, and the Workbook suits middle school through high school, and adults too.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each tell the story with their own emphasis, so putting the events in sequence means harmonizing the four Gospels. The Glory of the Cross follows Christ’s life in order through six parts: His introduction to ministry, His Galilean ministry, His multiregional ministry, His Judean ministry, His final week, and His global ministry through His death, resurrection and ascension. Its first appendix is an outline of His life with a harmony of the Gospels.

Chronologies differ. The book’s timeline places the start of His public ministry, beginning with His baptism, in early AD 28, and His crucifixion in April AD 30, a little over two years. Seeing how short that span was helps children grasp how much Christ did, and how steadily He walked toward the cross.

Begin where Scripture does: Jesus is the Son of God who humbled Himself, became a man, and was obedient to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:6–8). He was pierced for our transgressions, and with His wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). The Glory of the Cross is built around this truth, that God’s glory shines most brightly in Christ’s humility and sacrifice, and it traces His descent step by step to Calvary.
